A Company Culture Rooted in Values

Posted by Jarrett on Jun 27, 2018 3:58:00 PM

What is a company’s culture? It is one of the defining characteristics of an organization’s success. An uplifting business environment empowers members to reach higher and go further. When your company culture is positive, it encourages employees and cultivates a good working atmosphere. On the flip side, a poor organizational culture can be damaging and discouraging to one of the core elements of a business, it’s people. At Jarrett Companies, we are committed to having a positive company culture, and we see it as one of our largest priorities.

When you think of a bully, what comes to mind? I think of the stereotypical movie scene where elementary school children are playing outside during recess without a care in the world. An older boy with a scowl on his face disrupts the fun and pushes one of the kids. The older boy demands money to buy lunch for himself, and the younger child sheepishly complies. After the incident, the younger boy’s friends try to make him feel better and start thinking of ways they can stand up to the bully.

Getting The News Too Late

If you’re not aware of the story of World War II Japanese soldier, Hiroo Onoda, you are missing out on an incredible story. During the war, he was dispatched to a small Philippine island with strict commands to do all he could to fight off enemy attacks and to destroy key sites on the island. He was instructed that he was not to surrender for any reason and he would be given further instructions by his commanding officer. This occurred in December 1944 – a date to remember.

There are always plenty of storylines leading up to and following the Super Bowl each year. This year one of the most interesting storylines to me has been the story of the Super Bowl MVP that almost never was. Nick Foles (quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles) was thrust into the starting role after Carsen Wentz went down with an injury last December. Foles looked built for the spotlight of the game’s biggest stage showing the ability to make great decisions, displaying pinpoint accuracy and leading the Eagles to victory over the New England Patriots.

Taking Control of Inbound Freight Costs

How many times have you heard companies advertise they are giving away something for free to their customers?  Grocery stores are notorious for this type of marketing. They often run weekly ads boasting “Buy One Get One Free (BOGO)”, which excites customers and attracts them to their store. Grocery stores strategically arrange products for increased sales. Often lower profit margin items are located in center aisles while higher profit margins items are located on the perimeter. This ensures customers will have to walk by higher margin items during their shopping experience. The grocery store is banking on customers purchasing these higher margin items.

How Do You Measure Vendor Performance?

There’s a bar and grill in my hometown that has been a local favorite of many for a long time. I make it over regularly for lunch and occasionally an evening to watch a ball game. It’s my favorite place to grab a burger and a plate of waffle fries. Come to think of it - I don’t think I have ever had a bad burger, been treated poorly, or spent too long waiting before the waitress drops the plate in front of me and with a friendly smile asks, “Can I get you anything else.” It probably makes a difference when you know most of the staff and grew up with a few of them. I look forward to the burger and the experience each and every time.
