U.S. Weather Update 1.13.25

Summary:
Critical to extremely critical fire weather conditions are forecast for coastal southern California through Wednesday due to moderate to locally strong Santa Ana winds. Particularly Dangerous Situation Red Flag Warnings have been issued. Across the Great Lakes, heavy lake effect snow is expected downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario from this afternoon into late Wednesday night. Impacted Lanes: I-5, I-15, I-40, I-10, I-90, I-75, I-94, I-69, I-79, I-86, I-81


Michigan
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 AM EST Tuesday morning

  • Heavy lake effect snow. Additional snow accumulations between 5 and 11 inches.
  • Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning and evening commutes today.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 AM EST Wednesday morning

  • Lake Effect Snow and areas of blowing and drifting snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches with isolated higher amounts possible.
  • Impacts: Visibility and road conditions may change rapidly over short distances in lake effect snow. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commutes.

New York
Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 4 AM EST Thursday morning

  • Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations 10 to 20 inches in the most persistent lake snows. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel will be very difficult with very poor visibility and deep snow cover on roads. The hazardous conditions will impact the Monday evening and Tuesday morning and evening commutes.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 AM EST Wednesday morning

  • Lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 3 and 6 inches.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions.

California
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 12:15 PM PST Wednesday afternoon

  • Northeast winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM PST Wednesday afternoon

  • North winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects and result in areas of blowing dust. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM PST this afternoon

  • Minor coastal flooding expected.
  • Impacts: Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected.
