U.S. Weather Update 1.17.24

Summary:
Active weather pattern continues with heavy mountain snows for the Northwest portion of the country; ice storm for areas of the interior Pacific Northwest. Bands of heavy lake-effect snow continue for the Great Lakes, especially off Lake's Erie and Ontario with several feet of snow expected. Temperatures slowly moderate through Thursday for the Plains, another Arctic blast expected late this week. Impacted Lanes: I-55, I-90, I-5, I-82, I-84, I-15, I-94, I-86, I-80, I-70, I-25, I-75, I-81


Oregon
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM PST this afternoon

  • Mixed precipitation. Additional snow accumulations of less than one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph. 
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Ice Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 PM PST this afternoon

  • Icing continues. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches and ice accumulations of up to one quarter of an inch. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Expect power outages and tree damage due to the ice. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 AM PST this morning

  • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to 2 inches.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery roads and difficult driving conditions.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 3 PM PST this afternoon

  • South to southeast winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 40 to 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Winds could cause blowing and drifting snow. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

Wyoming
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 11 AM MST Thursday morning

  • West winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph. Areas of blowing and drifting snow.
  • Impacts: Mainly to transportation. Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight or high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 PM MST Thursday evening

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 12 to 20 inches, with localized amounts of up to 30 inches in the higher peaks. Winds gusting 35 to 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 PM MST Thursday evening

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches. Blowing and drifting snow with winds gusting as high as 35 to 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Illinois 

Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice

  • Flooding caused by an ice jam continues.
  • Impacts: Flooding of roads and streets will continue. Yards and other low-lying areas along the river will remain inundated by water and ice. Shifting of ice may damage structures along the shore. 

New York
Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 7 PM EST Thursday evening

  • Heavy lake effect snow. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet in the most persistent lake snows, with the greatest amounts centered on Tug Hill. Storm totals could locally exceed 4 feet. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph will result in blowing and drifting snow, with near white-out conditions at times, especially this afternoon and evening. 
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 AM EST Thursday morning

  • Lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches with localized higher amounts possible near Tupper Lake.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute.
