Summary:
A storm tracking through the Northeast U.S. on New Year's Day will bring rain through southern New England and rain changing to snow across interior New England, the central Appalachians, and downwind of the Great Lakes along with widespread gusty winds. Several weak waves of Pacific moisture will bring periods of low elevation rain showers and mountain snow to the Northwest U.S. into the weekend. Impacted Lanes: I-80, I-90, I-5, I-82, I-84, I-94, I-15, I-25, I-70, I-76, I-35, I-79, I-86, I-99, I-81, I-88, I-87, I-89, I-91, I-93, I-95


Iowa
Snow Squall Warning remains in effect until 8:30 AM CST this morning

  • Intense burst of heavy snow. Winds are generally under 15 mph, but any wind will blow the snow and further reduce the visibility.
  • Impacts: Travel will become difficult and potentially dangerous within minutes. This includes travel along Interstate 80

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 PM CST this afternoon

  • Snow. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions will impact this morning's commute.

New York
Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 4 PM EST Saturday afternoon

  • Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches with locally higher amounts up to 12 inches in the most persistent snow bands. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
  • Impacts: Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. Travel could be difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches resulting in power outages.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM EST this afternoon

  • Lake effect snow. Additional snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM EST this evening

  • West winds around 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Isolated gusts to 55 mph possible.
  • Impacts: Strong winds will blow down scattered tree limbs. A few trees and power lines could be downed, with power outages possible. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 AM EST Friday morning

  • Heavy snow. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 14 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 to 50 mph.
  • Impacts: The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Strong winds may also cause areas of blowing snow and reduce visibilities farther. Travel could be very difficult. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Wyoming
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 AM MST this morning

  • Snow. Additional snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches.
  • Impacts: Travel could be difficult. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM MST this morning

  • Snow. Additional snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches.
  • Impacts: Travel could be difficult. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 8 PM MST this evening

  • West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph possible.
  • Impacts: Mainly to transportation. Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight or high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers.

South Dakota
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM MST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous. With temperatures below freezing, frost may form on roadways, especially on bridges.
