U.S. Weather Update 1.21.25

Summary:
Arctic air will filter south and east through early this week. As this cold air moves across the South, a rare winter storm is forecast to develop from Texas, Gulf Coast States into the Southeast through early this week. Several new daily record low temperatures are expected, including new record-low maximum temperatures. For Southern California, fire weather concerns increase this week. Impacted Lanes: I-5, I-10, I-15, I-40, I-90, I-25, I-80, I-37, I-69, I-45, I-49, I-12, I-55, I-59, I-20, I-65, I-85, I-16, I-26, I-95, I-77, I-96, I-94, I-75, I-81


Louisiana
Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 12:15 PM CST this afternoon

  • Blizzard conditions. Additional snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches.
  • Impacts: Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11:59 PM CST this evening

  • Moderate to heavy snow expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations between 3 and 7 inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze.
  • Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions will impact the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11:59 PM CST this evening

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations around one inch.
  • Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.

New York
Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 4 AM EST Wednesday morning

  • Heavy lake effect snow. Additional snow accumulations ranging from 6 to 12 inches across much of Buffalo and the central eastern suburbs, to 9 to 18 inches from South Buffalo across the Southtowns. Accumulations of 5 to 10 inches expected across far southwestern Genesee county.
  • Impacts: Travel will be very difficult with very poor visibility and deep snow cover on roads. Some major roadways could temporarily close.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 AM EST Wednesday morning

  • Lake effect snow. Additional snow accumulations up to 4 to 8 inches.
  • Impacts: The combination of reduced visibilities and snow covered roads could result in difficult travel conditions.

California
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 4 PM PST this afternoon

  • East winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 70 mph. Isolated gusts to 80 to 90 mph for the San Diego County mountains.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 2 PM PST this afternoon

  • Northeast winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected. Locally damaging wind gusts to 60 mph near Altadena, and across the Antelope Valley and Antelope Valley Foothills.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
