U.S. Weather Update 10.16.24

Summary:
Unseasonably cool temperatures continue for much of the East with frost and freeze concerns from the Central U.S. to parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Elevated to critical fire weather conditions will develop over parts of the southern Great Basin, Plains, southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas through Thursday, where Fire Weather Watches and Red Flag Warnings have been issued. Impacted Lanes: I-80, I-40, I-26, I-5, I-15, I-90, I-37, I-45, I-69, I-10, I-95, I-75


Montana
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 12:15 PM MDT Friday afternoon

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations up to 6 inches below 7000 feet, with 6 to 14 inches above 7000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be difficult and tire chains may be required for some vehicles.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM MDT Friday evening

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 10 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

California
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 11 AM PDT Friday morning

  • Northwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PDT this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 11 PM PDT Friday evening

  • North winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Florida
Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM EDT Friday evening

  • Moderate coastal flooding
  • Impacts: Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected.

Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice

  • Major flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
  • Impacts: Major widespread and long duration flooding occurs, with water rescues and evacuations necessary. Most low-lying homes become uninhabitable due to 2 to 3 feet water depth in many areas of the community on or near the river. Water is over roadways.
