U.S. Weather Update 10.17.24

Summary:
As a powerful Pacific system moves inland, accumulating snow for the higher terrain of the West and increasing winds will affect the central and western United States. These winds combining with dry fuels may allow any wildfires to spread quickly for portions of the Plains, including California. Onshore flow across coastal areas of Texas and the Southeast with flood inundation and rip currents. Impacted Lanes: I-40, I-26, I-15, I-70, I-80, I-10, I-5, I-90, I-94, I-17, I-8, I-25, I-75, I-95, I-4


Utah
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 12:15 PM MDT Saturday afternoon.

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches expected, with up to 22 inches.
  • Impacts: Winter driving conditions can be expected along all mountain routes, including higher passes along I-15 and I-70.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM MDT Friday morning.

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations 2 to 8 inches.
  • Impacts: Winter driving conditions are expected on most mountain routes, including I-80.

California
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 11 AM PDT Friday morning

  • Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 5 PM PDT Friday evening

  • Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Difficult driving conditions, especially for larger vehicles traveling along roads with crosswinds. Light, unsecured objects may become airborne.

Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM PDT this  morning

  • Visibility less than one mile in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous.

Florida
Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice

  • Major flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
  • Impacts: Major widespread and long duration flooding occurs, with water rescues and evacuations necessary. Most low-lying homes become uninhabitable due to 2 to 3 feet water depth in many areas of the community on or near the river. Water is over roadways. 

Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 5 AM EDT Saturday morning

  • Significant coastal flooding during high tides.
  • Impacts: Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property including some critical infrastructure will be inundated.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 2 PM EDT Sunday afternoon

  • Minor coastal flooding expected.
  • Impacts: Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening

  • North winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.
  • Impacts: .Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
