U.S. Weather Update 12.13.23

Summary:
A powerful system will continue to bring winter impacts to southern and eastern Alaska through the day. Lake effect snow will continue downwind of the Great Lakes. Moderate to heavy snow is expected to impact portions of the Southern Rockies and High Plains through Thursday. Impacted Lanes: I-40, I-5, I-90, I-86, I-84, I-15, I-80, I-25, I-280, I-680, I-27, I-70, I-81


New Mexico
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 2 AM MST Friday morning

  • Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations between 4 to 12 inches below 7,500 feet with higher amounts of 10 to 24 inches above 7,500 feet. Up to one tenth of an inch of ice accumulation is possible in Union and Harding counties. 
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Some roads may be closed. Significant travel delays are possible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 2 AM MST Friday morning

  • Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 to 5 inches with locally higher amounts up to 12 inches atop the Sandia Crest. Up to one tenth of an inch of ice accumulation is possible in the Central Highlands. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Tire traction will be reduced. Extend the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. This includes along portions of I-40. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes.

California
Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM PST this afternoon

  • Minor coastal flooding expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects and make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM PST this afternoon

  • Northeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected.

Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

Idaho
Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM MST this morning

  • Visibility one mile or less in freezing fog. Some of the fog will be locally dense with visibility below one- quarter mile.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility and potential ice on roadways.

Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM MST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.
