U.S. Weather Update 12.19.24

Summary:
Areas of moderate to heavy snow and gusty to high winds are expected across the Northern Plains, Upper Midwest and Great Lakes. Patchy areas of light rain/freezing rain may develop along the rain-snow line over parts of the Northern Plains into the morning. A mix of light snow and freezing rain or drizzle is possible in the central Appalachians that may impact the morning commute. Impacted Lanes: I-90, I-5, I-25, I-76, I-70, I-80, I-94, I-29, I-35, I-39, I-43, I-41, I-96, I-75, I-95, I-4, I-10


North Dakota
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 2 PM MST this afternoon

  • Northwest winds up to 40 mph with gusts to 65 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM CST this evening

  • Heavy snow and blowing snow expected. Event total snow accumulations between 3 and 5 inches, with localized areas of 6 to 8 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph. Highest winds this afternoon.
  • Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commutes today.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM CST this evening

  • Snow and blowing snow. Additional snow accumulations up to one inch. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Widespread blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute.

Washington
Flood Warning remains in effect until 1 PM PST Saturday afternoon

  • Moderate flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast.
  • Impacts: Moderate flooding, with deep and quick flood waters inundating some residential areas and many roads. 

Flood Watch remains in effect until 4 PM PST this afternoon

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Water over roadways is expected. 

Florida
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM EST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous.

Iowa
Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM CST this evening

  • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph, are expected
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
