U.S. Weather Update 12.5.24

Summary:
A powerful Arctic cold front will sweep across the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast this morning. Snow squalls along this front will be accompanied by intense bursts of heavy snowfall and gusty winds, producing dangerous travel conditions due to whiteouts and icy roads. Wind gusts up to 80 mph will spread into the Central Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. Impacted Lanes:  I-80, I-40, I-5, I-84, I-94, I-90, I-96, I-75, I-20, I-26, I-95, I-77, I-81, I-79, I-70, I-76, I-86, I-88, I-91, I-89, I-93


Pennsylvania
Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 1 AM EST Saturday morning

  • Blizzard conditions. Additional snow accumulations of 10 to 18 inches north of I-90 increasing to 12 to 20 inches with locally higher amounts south of I-90. Wind gusts up to 60 mph north of I-90 and up to 50 mph south of I-90, mainly this morning.
  • Impacts: Visibilities will drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. Significant drifting of snow is likely, including across some roadways. The strong winds may cause downed trees and power outages. Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Travel is expected to be impossible today and should be postponed. The hazardous conditions will impact the commutes this morning and evening.

Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 1 PM EST Friday afternoon

  • Heavy lake effect snow. Additional snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 PM EST Friday afternoon

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations between 2 and 6 inches with higher amounts possible on ridgetops. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Snow and blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility with near-blizzard conditions at times on the ridgetops.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 AM EST Friday morning

  • Snow and blowing snow. Additional snow accumulations between 3 and 6 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph will produce areas of blowing snow.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM EST this evening

  • West winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts near 40 to 50 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

North Carolina
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 4 PM EST this afternoon

  • West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM EST this afternoon

  • West winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM EST this afternoon

  • Up to 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
  • Impacts: Up to 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways resulting in a low threat of property damage. Some roads and low lying property will experience shallow flooding.

California
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility will make driving conditions hazardous.

Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM PST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in freezing fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous, especially along I-80 near Fernley. Roads may also be slick.

Additional Dense Fog Advisories include but are not limited to: Montana, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho
