U.S. Weather Update 3.12.25

Summary:
A Pacific storm with atmospheric river will bring heavy mountain snow and strong winds to the Sierra Nevada and heavy rainfall over parts of coastal southern California through Thursday. Severe thunderstorms are likely in portions of the Southern Plains into the MS Valley late Wednesday. An extended period of critical fire weather conditions will continue in the Southern Plains through Saturday. Impacted Lanes: I-90, I-5, I-80, I-15, I-10, I-8, I-40, I-17, I-25, I-70


California
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 AM PDT Saturday morning

  • Heavy snow possible with 12 to 24 inches possible above 6500-7000 feet, 6-12 inches 5500-7000, 1-5 inches 4000-5500 feet, and up to an inch as low as 3000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 AM PDT Thursday morning

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations 2 to 6 inches, with up to 10 inches above 5500 feet. Winds gusting up to 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. Blowing snow will result in lower visibility.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 8 AM PDT Thursday morning

  • Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM PDT this evening

  • South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Flood Watch remains in effect until 6 PM PDT Thursday evening

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Water over roadways is expected. 

Mississippi
Flood Warning remains in effect until 7 AM CDT Sunday morning

  • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
  • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Streams continue to rise due to continuous rainfall. Low-water crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable.

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 7 AM CDT Monday morning

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent. Water over roadways.
