U.S. Weather Update 5.1.24

Summary:
Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected Wednesday from the Central Plains into western Texas. An Enhanced Risk (level 3 of 5) has been issued for parts of Kansas and Oklahoma. The main threats will be tornadoes, very large hail, and damaging winds. Additionally, heavy rain and flash flooding is likely across portions of the Midwest into the Central and Southern Plains. Impacted Lanes: I-5, I-90, I-94, I-80, I-70, I-40, I-35, I-49, I-10, I-55, I-59, I-65, I-75, I-81, I-77


Montana
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 12:15 PM MDT Thursday afternoon

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of between 5 and 10 inches, with up to 18 inches over the higher terrain of Glacier National Park. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible and tire chains may be required for some vehicles. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM MDT Thursday evening

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 8 inches with highest amounts over the Big Belt and Snowy Mountain ranges. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Slush and or snow covered roads could cause difficult travel conditions.

Texas
Flood Warning remains in effect until 6 AM CDT Saturday morning

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.
  • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall. Water over roadways. 

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening

  • Minor coastal flooding.
  • Impacts: Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected.

Flood Watch remains in effect until 11 PM CDT Thursday evening

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Area creeks and streams are running high and could flood with more heavy rain.

Ohio
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM EDT this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous.

California
Wind Advisory remains in effect until 5 PM PDT this evening

  • North winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
