U.S. Weather Update 5.21.24

Summary:
A Moderate Risk (Level 4 of 5) of severe thunderstorms is expected across the Midwest today, especially portions of Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin and Illinois. Damaging winds, large hail and a few strong tornadoes are expected. A dangerous early season heat wave will continue this week and expand from south Texas through portions of the central Gulf Coast by this weekend. Impacted Lanes: I-90, I-25, I-80, I-29, I-94, I-35, I-39, I-380


Iowa
Flood Warning remains in effect until 4 PM CDT this afternoon

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is occurring, and is expected to continue through early afternoon.
  • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is occurring. While some of the smaller streams have already reached their highest levels, some of the larger streams will continue to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall. It will take several hours for all the water from these storms to work through local drainage systems in some urban areas. Water is over roadways. 

Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 12:30 PM CDT this afternoon

  • Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing flash flooding.
  • Impacts: Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.

WInd Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM CDT this evening 

  • Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

Flood Watch remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening

  • Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Water over roadways. 

Wyoming
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM MDT this evening

  • Heavy snow expected. Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 9 inches.
  • Impacts: Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM MDT this evening

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions.

Nebraska
Flood Warning remains in effect until 4 PM CDT this afternoon

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is occurring, and is expected to continue through early afternoon.
  • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is occurring. While some of the smaller streams have already reached their highest levels, some of the larger streams will continue to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall.   • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.
  • Impacts: Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM CDT this morning

  • Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways.

Flood Watch remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening 

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, roadways, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

South Carolina
Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM EDT this evening

  • Up to one half foot of inundation above ground level expected along shorelines and tidal waterways. 
  • Impacts: This could result in some roads becoming impassable.

Wisconsin
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM CDT this morning

  • Visibility one quarter to one half mile in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous.

Flood Watch remains in effect until 11:59 PM CDT this evening

  • Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: .Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Water over roadways.
