U.S. Weather Update 5.23.24

Summary:
Heavy wet snow and gusty winds are expected in the higher elevations of Idaho, western Montana, and Wyoming Thursday. Meanwhile, another round of severe storms are expected to develop across the central and southern Plains. Damaging winds, tornadoes and large hail are the primary threats. Further west, dry conditions and gusty winds will lead to critical fire weather concerns in the Southwest. Impacted Lanes: I-80, I-25, I-94, I-90, I-15, I-35, I-40, I-76, I-78, I-84, I-81


Wyoming
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 AM MDT Friday morning

  • Heavy snow. Total snow accumulations 1 to 2 feet. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM MDT this evening

  • Snow. Accumulations of 6 to 12 inches north of Powder River pass; 2 to 6 inches south of Powder River Pass. Local accumulations up to 16 inches are possible north of Granite Pass. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be difficult.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 6 PM MDT this evening

  • West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph possible.
  • Impacts: Mainly to transportation. Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight or high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers.

Pennsylvania
Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10:30 AM EDT this morning

  • Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways.

California
Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM PDT Saturday evening

  • West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Travel will be difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles. Blowing dust will reduce visibilities at times.

Texas
Flood Warning remains in effect until 8 AM CDT Saturday morning

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is occurring.
  • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Numerous roads remain closed due to flooding. It will take several hours for all the water from these storms to work through local drainage systems in urban areas.

Flood Watch remains in effect until 11:59 PM CDT this evening

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: .Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor-drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may become flooded.
