U.S. Weather Update 5.24.24

Summary:
Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are expected to develop from the southern Plains to portions of the Midwest Friday. Damaging winds and very large hail will be the primary hazards. On the drier side of the system, critical fire weather conditions will be possible across the Southwest. Meanwhile, excessive heat concerns continue to impact portions of southern Texas and Florida. Impacted Lanes: I-94, I-29, I-90, I-35, I-80, I-65, I-64, I-75, I-40


South Dakota
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 2 PM MDT this afternoon

  • Northwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Strong winds can cause blowing dust, reduced visibility, and flying debris.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM CDT this evening

  • Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

Iowa
Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall.
  • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Numerous roads remain closed due to flooding. 

Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 PM CDT this afternoon

  • Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Area creeks and streams are running high and could flood with more heavy rain. Water over roadways is possible. 

Mississippi
Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10:30 AM CDT this morning

  • Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water is over roadways. 

Kentucky
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM EDT this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.
