U.S. Weather Update 6.17.24

Summary:
Diverse pattern across the country with accumulating heavy wet snow across the northern Rockies into the new week. Meanwhile, deep tropical moisture is expected to move ashore across the Gulf Coast States with the threat of heavy rainfall. This threat extends into the upper Midwest where flash flooding and a few severe storms. In addition, a heat wave is building from the Plains into Northeast. Impacted Lanes: I-5, I-90, I-15, I-94, I-84, I-29, I-80, I-35 


South Dakota
Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 11 AM CDT this morning

  • Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.
  • Impacts: Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10:15 AM CDT this morning

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

Montana
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 AM MDT Tuesday morning

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations 1 to 4 inches Butte to Anaconda, 2 to 5 inches at Ovando, Georgetown Lake, Macdonald Pass, and Homestake Pass. 5 to 14 inches in the higher terrain.
  • Impacts: Travel will be very difficult. Snow on trees could cause breaking branches and power outages. There will be two periods of snow in the valleys, one Monday morning and the other Monday night.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM MDT Tuesday evening

  • Heavy, wet snow. Additional snow accumulations up to 8 inches between 6000 and 8000 feet, with higher amounts possible over the highest terrain.
  • Impacts: Travel could be difficult. The heavy, wet nature of snow can bring down tree limbs and power lines.

California 
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 AM PDT Tuesday morning

  • Northwest winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 70 mph.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 3 AM PDT Tuesday morning

  • Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected. There will somewhat of a lull in the winds late tonight and Monday morning.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

Louisiana
Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM CDT Wednesday afternoon

  • Minor coastal flooding expected.
  • Impacts: Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected.

Minnesota
Flood Watch remains in effect until 11 AM CDT Wednesday morning

  • Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Water over roadways is possible.
