U.S. Weather Update 6.18.24

Summary:
Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, hail and heavy rainfall will be possible this afternoon over the Upper Mississippi Valley and Central Plains. A low pressure system in the Western Gulf of Mexico will bring heavy to excessive rainfall for much of South Texas. A dangerous heat wave will impact much of the Midwest to the Northeast through this week. Impacted Lanes: I-80, I-5, I-90, I-10, I-35


New York
Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 12:45 PM EDT this afternoon

  • Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.
  • Impacts: Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Wyoming
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 AM MDT this morning

  • West winds 30 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph possible.
  • Impacts: Mainly to transportation. Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight or high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers.

Louisiana
Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 7 AM CDT Thursday morning

  • Significant coastal flooding.
  • Impacts: Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure will be inundated.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 7 AM CDT Thursday morning

  • Minor coastal flooding.
  • Impacts: Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected.

Montana
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM MDT this evening

  • Wet snow. Additional snow accumulations up to four inches.
  • Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely be slick and hazardous.

Kansas
Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening

  • South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. In addition, high winds may also cause blowing dust and reduced visibility. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

Flood Watch remains in effect until 7 PM CDT Wednesday evening

  • Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Low-water crossings and other roadways may be flooded.
