U.S. Weather Update 8.7.24

Summary:
Tropical moisture from Debby will track northward with excessive rainfall potential from the Carolina's and eventually into the Northeast corridor. Gusty winds will accompany the track of Debby as this storm tracks northward through the first half of the weekend. Meanwhile, heat and fire weather concerns for the Intermountain West continues. Impacted Lanes: I-95, I-16, I-26, I-40


South Carolina
Flood Warning remains in effect until 11 AM EDT this morning

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.
  • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, roadways, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Several structures are flooded and numerous roads remain closed due to flooding. Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall.

Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect until further notice

  • Wind: Tropical Storm force wind; 35-45 mph with gusts to 55 mph
  • Impacts: Potential for wind 58 to 73 mph. A few bridges and access routes impassable. Travel by vehicle is difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 
  • Storm Surge: Localized storm surge possible; The potential for up to 2 feet above ground somewhere within surge prone areas.
  • Impacts: Areas of inundation of saltwater along immediate shorelines and in low-lying spots farther inland near rivers and creeks, with storm surge flooding accentuated by waves. Damage to several buildings, mainly near the coast. Sections of near-shore escape routes and roads become weakened or washed out, especially in normally vulnerable low spots.
  • Flooding Rain: Additional 3-6 inches, with locally higher amounts.
  • Impacts: Extensive. Major rainfall flooding could prompt many rescues. Rivers and tributaries could rapidly overflow their banks in multiple locations. Small streams, creeks, canals, ditches may become dangerous rivers. Flood control systems and barriers could become stressed. Flood waters could enter many structures within multiple communities; some structures become uninhabitable or are washed away. Flood waters could cover multiple escape routes. Streets and parking lots become rivers of moving water with underpasses submerged. Driving conditions become dangerous. Many road and bridge closures with some weakened or washed out.

Flood Watch remains in effect until 8 AM EDT Friday morning

  • Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Extensive street flooding and flooding of creeks and rivers are possible.
