U.S. Weather Update 9.9.22

Summary:
Moisture from a weakening Kay may produce heavy rain and potential for considerable flash flooding in the Southwest, especially, in the Peninsular ranges.  Heavy rain may produce localized flooding in the Southeast. Swells from Hurricane Earl will produce dangerous surf and rip currents on the East Coast. 


California
Flood Advisory remains in effect until 9 PM PDT tomorrow evening

  • Flash Flooding, including landslides caused by excessive rainfall is expected
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris. Area creeks and streams are running high and could flood with more heavy rain. Landslides are possible.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 12 AM PDT 

  • East winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to  70 mph expected
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Virginia
Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 6 AM EDT Saturday Morning

  • Up to two feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
  • Impacts: Widespread flooding of vulnerable areas will result in an elevated threat of property damage to homes and businesses near the waterfront and shoreline. Water will be 1 to 2 feet above ground level in some areas resulting in a sufficient depth to close numerous roads and threaten homes and businesses. Flooding will extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays resulting in some road closures and flooding of vehicles.

Delaware
Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 4 AM EDT Saturday Morning

  • Up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
  • Impacts: At this level, flooding begins on the most vulnerable roads along tidal waterways. Some partial or full road closures are possible.
 

Additional Flood Advisories include but are not limited to: Arizona, Nevada, and Florida

Additional Coastal Flood Advisories include but are not limited to: New Jersey, Maryland, and Washington D.C areas

Summary:
Blistering heat continues in parts of the West and into the Plains. Earl will produce dangerous surf and rip currents on the East Coast. Heavy rain and flooding potential in the Southeast. Heavy rain and flooding threat from Kay possible later this week and into the weekend across the Southwest 


New Jersey
Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 11PM EDT.

  • What: One to two feet of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
  • Impacts: At this level, flooding begins on the most vulnerable roads in coastal and bayside communities, and along inland tidal waterways. Some partial or full road closures are possible. At this level, widespread roadway flooding occurs in coastal and bayside communities and along inland tidal waterways. Many roads become impassable. Some damage to vulnerable structures may begin to occur. 

Hurricane Kay Update
Hurricane and Tropical Storm conditions remains in effect until 11 PM PDT Saturday Evening

  • Baja California peninsula, Northwestern Mexico and Southwestern Arizona are effected
  • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Heavy Rainfall could lead to flash flooding and landslides.

Summary:
Oppressive heat with the potential for dozens of record high temperatures persists across the West.  Heavy rain and localized flash flooding will be possible from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Impacted Lanes: I-76, I-476

Pennsylvania
Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 11:00 AM today

  • Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. Between  2.5 and 3.5 inches of rain have fallen. 
    The expected rainfall rate
    is 1 to 2 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2
    inches are possible in the warned area.
  • Impacts: Flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses as well as other, drainage and low lying areas.
  • Highways Impacted: Pennsylvania Turnpike between mile markers 308 and 346. Interstate 76 in Pennsylvania between mile markers 327 and 342. Interstate 476 in Pennsylvania between mile markers 3 and 19. Northeast Extension between mile markers 21 and 38.

Flash Advisory remains in effect until 12:00 PM EST today.

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

Kentucky
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10:00 AM EST this morning.

  • What: Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.
     

Additional Flood Advisories include but are not limited to: New York, Connecticut, Delaware, and New Jersey

Additional Dense Fog Advisory include but are not limited to: Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois

Weather Update 8.4.22

Summary:
Widespread heat and dangerous heat indices will stretch from Texas to the Northeast and across Montana. Record high temperatures are expected along the I-95 corridor from Boston to Washington, DC. Heavy rain may produce flooding across the Southwestern U.S. and across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. Fire weather and isolated dry thunderstorms are likely from the Interior Northwest to Montana.

    • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph, are expected
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

  • Flood Warning remains in effect until 9 AM CDT this morning
    • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues
    • Impacts: Numerous roads remain closed due to flooding

Weather Update 7.29.22

Summary:
The dangerous heat wave in the Northwest will continue into the weekend. Continued heavy rain and thunderstorms will exacerbate flooding and cause flash flooding the next few days across parts of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys into the central Appalachians. Daily rounds of heavy downpours could cause flash flooding across portions of Arizona to the Four-Corners region into the weekend.

 

Kentucky

Flood Warning
  • Flood Warning remains in effect until late tonight
    • Moderate flooding is occurring
    • Where: The Flood Warning is for the South Fork of the Kentucky River at Booneville
    • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Road closures expected including Highway 30

Summary:
A dangerous heat wave, with widespread excessive heat warnings, heat advisories, and record breaking temperatures will continue to impact the Northwestern U.S. the rest of the week into the upcoming weekend. Excessive rainfall is expected to lead to flooding near the central High Plains and across the Ohio Valley.

 

West Virginia 

 Flood Warning
  • Flash Flood Warning  in effect until 10:30 AM EDT this morning
    • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues
    • Impacts: One lane of U.S. Route 60 remains closed at Rupert due to high water flooding

 

Kentucky

Flood Warning
  • Flood Warning in effect until 2:15 PM EDT this afternoon
    • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected
    • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring

 

Virginia

Flash Flood Warning / Flood Warning
  • Flash Flood Warning in effect until noon EDT today
    • Flash flooding caused by heavy rain
    • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring
  • Flood Warning in effect until 11 AM EDT
    • Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly

Summary:
A dangerous heat wave with record warm temperatures will persist across the Northwestern U.S. this week. Intense heat will linger in the south-central U.S. through Wednesday. A threat of flash flooding will exist from the Southwest into the Southern Rockies as well as from the Ohio Valley into the Appalachians through the week.

Missouri 

Flash Flood Warning / Flood Warning
  • Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 9:30 AM CDT this morning
    • Between 4 and 7 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area
    • Flash flooding is already occurring
    • Where: Central Saint Louis County and The Saint Louis City
    • Impacts: High water accumulated on highways and backroads can submerge vehicles. Expect road closures, including Interstate 70 in Missouri near exit 23.
  • Flood Warning in effect from this morning to late Thursday morning
    • Minor flooding is forecast
    • Impacts: State Highway H near the West Fork Cuivre River bridge will be closed due to flooding

Illinois

Flash Flood Warning / Flood Warning
  • Flash Flood Warning in effect until 12:45 PM CDT today
    • Between 2 and 4 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly
    • Impacts: Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas
  • Flood Warning in effect until 11:30 AM CDT this morning
    • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected
    • Impacts: Low-water crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable. Expect many areas of slow moving or standing water

Weather Update 6.17.22

Summary:
Scattered severe thunderstorms will spread across the Ohio Valley and into Upstate New York into this evening. Large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes can be expected. Excessive heat is in place today over the mid-Mississippi Valley and southern Arizona. Another round of excessive heat is expected to spread from the northern Plains into the Southeast U.S. from Saturday into mid next week.

 

California

Wind Advisory
  • Wind Advisory now in effect until 9 PM PDT this evening
    • Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
      • Localized higher gusts possible in wind prone locations
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result

 

Nevada

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from 9 PM this morning to 11 PM PDT this evening
    • Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
      • Localized higher gusts possible in wind prone locations
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel will be difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Blowing dust may reduce visibilities at times, which in turn could make travel challenging

 

Utah

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from 10 AM this morning to 10 PM MDT this evening
    • Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel will be difficult especially for high profile vehicles. Areas of blowing dust are expected across the area may suddenly and significantly reduce visibility in some locations. This includes areas along I-15.

 

Montana

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from 9 AM this morning to 9 PM MDT this evening
    • South winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

North Dakota & South Dakota

Wind Advisory
  • Wind Advisory remains in effect from noon to 8 PM CDT this evening
    • Southeast winds around 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

Nevada

Blowing Dust Advisory / Wind Advisory
  • Blowing Dust Advisory in effect from 2 PM Thursday to 9 PM PDT Friday
    • Visibility between one quarter mile and one mile in blowing dust expected in areas downwind of dry lake beds and desert sinks
    • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to reduced visibility
  • Wind Advisory remains in effect form 11 AM this morning to 11 PM PDT this evening
    • South winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Areas of blowing dust and sand are likely

  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 9 PM MDT this evening
    • West at 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Travel
      will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles
  • Flood Warning now in effect until tomorrow morning
    • Major flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast
      • This approaches the flood of record
    • Impacts: Possible road closures
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon MDT Today
    • Wet snow for elevations above 6000 feet
      • Additional snow accumulations up to two inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 55 mph
    • Impacts: Travel will continue to be difficult through this morning`s commute, especially over Kings Hill Pass and Deep Creek Pass. Strong winds could cause extensive damage to snow-loaded trees and power line.

 

North Dakota

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 PM CDT this evening
    • West winds to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Briefly stronger wind gusts will be possible with any showers that develop.

 

South Dakota

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning in effect from 11 AM this morning to 9 PM MDT this evening
    • West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected
    • Impacts: Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Strong winds can cause blowing dust, reduced visibility, and flying debris
