Weather Update 2.21.22 - U.S.

Summary:  A very active weather pattern is expected this week and the first of possibly two winter storms will impact the Central, Southern and Eastern U.S. the next couple of days. Heavy snow and ice will wallop much of the Upper Midwest into the Great Lakes, while severe thunderstorms with all hazards and heavy rain with flooding are likely from the southern Plains to the Tennessee Valley and South.

 
Major lanes of concern:
• Interstate 70 from Denver to the Interstate 15 junction in Utah.
• Interstate 90 from Seattle to Chicago.
• Interstate 90 from Reno, Nevada, to Chicago.
• Interstate 94 from Billings, Montana, to Minneapolis.

Oregon
Winter Weather Advisory
Western Oregon is under a winter weather advisory until 10am PST Tuesday.  Snow is expected in areas above 1500 feet.  
  • 1-3 inches below 2000 foot elevations
  • 3-6 inches above 2000 feet elevations
 
California
Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
California is scattered with winter weather advisories.  Areas include northwestern California, the Sierra Nevada mountains and the San Luis Obispo Mountains.  This will be the coldest storm that the San Luis Obispo Mountain range has seen this year.  There is a potential for widespread snow/ice impacts across lower elevation passes that could make travel difficult.   The winter storm warning is in place for the West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada which includes I-80 over Donner Pass, Highway 50 over Echo Summit and Highway 88 over Carson Pass.
  • Winter Storm Warning - Heavy snow expected.  8-12 inches above 4000 feet, with 12-24 inches above 6000 feet
  • Winter Weather Advisory - 1-3 inches with localized amounts up to 8 inches

Eastern Washington is under a wind chill advisory from 9pm tonight until 10am PST on Wednesday.

Most of Utah is under a winter weather advisory until 5am MST on Tuesday.  Snow expected.

Wyoming

A winter storm warning is in effect for parts of southern Wyoming until 11am MST on Tuesday.  A wind chill advisory is in effect for the state from 11am on Tuesday to 11am MST on Thursday.  The winter weather advisory is in effect for the remainder of the state from 5pm MST today.

  • Winter storm warning:  10-16 inches, with up to 19 inches along the South Shore of Lake Superior

Summary: As a strong cold front moves through the eastern U.S. tonight, strong storms, gusty winds, and mixed wintry precipitation will be possible. Gusty winds will remain possible for areas along the east coast through Friday morning. Blizzard conditions are likely on Friday across the north-central CONUS as a clipper system brings strong winds and snow to the region.

 
North Dakota
High Wind Warning/Blizzard Warning
Widespread blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute and possibly the evening commute. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

  • Winds gusting as high as 65 mph.
  • Visibility of 1/4 mile or less with near zero visibility at times
  • The cold wind chills as low as 30 below zero

Weather Update 2.17.22 - U.S.

Summary:  A powerful storm will sweep through the Eastern half of the U.S. through the end of this week with multiple hazards. A narrow zone of heavy snow and a wintry mix is expected from the south-central Plains to the Great Lakes. Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and a few strong tornadoes from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the Southeast, especially in the Tennessee Valley and Mid South today.  A Quick burst of heavy snow will extend from northern Oklahoma to southern Michigan today, with wintry weather also possible across far northern and western New York as well as northern Maine into Friday morning.  Also there is a bitter cold airmass found across the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains that is ahead of an approaching clipper system that may produce blizzard conditions on Friday.

 
Tornadoes are possible from Mississippi and northern Alabama to western portions of Tennessee and Kentucky.  
 
Delays in freight movement in the following areas should be expected due to reduced speeds, low visibility and the potential for road closures.  Large cities and freight hubs that could experience significant disruptions include but are not limited to:  Albuquerque, NM; Columbia, MO; St. Louis, MO; Denver, CO; Parsons, KS; Topeka, KS; Kansas City, MO;  Chicago, IL; Detroit, MI and Albany, NY.

Summary: A developing storm across the center of the nation will bring multiple hazards including accumulating ice, snow, heavy rainfall, winds and severe thunderstorms later today through Thursday.  Heavy snow is possible across parts of the central High Plains today.  There is a potential for a swath of disruptive snow and freezing rain to extend from northern Oklahoma to southern Michigan on Thursday.  Severe thunderstorms possible from the Southern Plains to the Mid-South beginning Wednesday night, while heavy rain may lead to isolated flash flooding throughout the Mid-Mississippi/Ohio Valleys and Southern Appalachians.

The eastern plains will see snow develop late in the afternoon and evening.  Roads will initially remain wet, but closer to sunset they should become slick and snow covered.  The heaviest snow is expected to fall between 5 and 9 PM.

Weather Update 2.15.22 - U.S.

Summary:  A potent storm system will continue to slice through the Western U.S. the next day or two with showers, mountain snow, gusty winds and cooler temperatures. On Wednesday through Friday morning, this system will evolve into a large scale, multi-hazard storm with heavy snow, a wintry mix, heavy rain with possible flooding and severe thunderstorms for the Central, Southern and Eastern U.S.

 
High winds could impact travel in the western U.S.  A fairly large region is under a wind advisory in southern Nevada, southeastern California, the southern Sierra Nevada, the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys, as well as a large part of Arizona.  Drivers will be impacted by rollover possibilities and areas of blowing dust reducing visibilities.
 
Major lanes of concern:  
• Interstate 15 from Barstow, California, to Mesquite, Nevada.
• Interstate 40 from Barstow, California, to the Arizona-New Mexico border.
• Interstate 5 from Palm Springs, California, to just west of Phoenix.

Summary:  Early this week, an aggressive storm system will begin to dig south and east across the Western U.S. to produce some heavy mountain snow and cooler temperatures. This system will evolve mid to late week into a large-scale, multi-hazard storm with heavy snow, a wintry mix, heavy rain with possible flooding and severe thunderstorms across the Central, Southern and Eastern U.S.

In Oregon, the Northern Oregon Cascades and Cascades are under a winter weather advisory until 10pm tonight for areas above 2500 feet.

A clipper will move through the Great Lakes with gusty winds and snow through Saturday. A cold front extending south will bring rain and snow to the Northeast.

A wind advisory is in place until 7pm CST this evening.  A winter weather advisory remains in effect until noon CST today.  Snow is Expected. 
  • West to northwest winds to around 35mph with gusts up to 55mph
  • Travel could be difficult especially for high profile vehicles

Weather Update 2.07.22 - U.S.

Summary:  Strong winds will develop across northern Montana on Monday. Gusts up to 80 mph are expected along the Rocky Mountain Front. A developing coastal wave may bring some wintry precipitation along the east coast Monday into Tuesday. A weak clipper across the Great Lakes region may bring light snow through Monday. Otherwise, weather remains relatively dry over the next three days.

The east coast storm will impact travel along the I-95 corridor. Areas of I-85 from Columbia, SC to Durham, NC could be slippery as well.

The storm from last week will continue to delay freight movement in numerous states. Some terminals experienced three days of closures last week while most others saw at least one day of closures in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.
