Weather Update 2.04.22 - U.S.

Summary

The expansive winter storm will shift into the Northeast bringing heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain.  The locations previously impacted by snow and/or ice from this storm will experience below freezing temperatures into the weekend which may prolong hazardous winter weather conditions and continue to disrupt travel.  
 
Storm recap:  
  • Thick ice in parts of mid-Mississippi Valley & Ohio Valley.  
  • As of 8am this morning, power companies are reporting more than 350,000 outages in eight states from Texas to New York. Almost 132,000 of those outages are in Tennessee. 
  • Dallas - Fort Worth airport closed for several hours on Thursday due to icy conditions.
  • More than 5,000 flights were cancelled across the U.S. on Thursday due to weather conditions.  As of this morning 2800 flights were cancelled today.
  • Union Pacific Railroad issued a statement yesterday stating that customers with freight shipments moving through the impacted states should expect delays between 24 - 48 hours.  
  • Road closures in eight states yesterday and throughout today are too many to count.
 
Major lanes of concern: 
• Interstate 80 from Cleveland to the I-95 junction in New Jersey.
• Interstate 76 from Philadelphia to Akron, Ohio.
• Interstate 95 from Philadelphia to Boston.

Areas just east of Everett, Seattle and Tacoma are under winter weather advisory from 1pm this afternoon until 10am this evening.  This is mostly for areas above 3500 feet.

Central Montana is under a high wind warning from noon today until 6am on Saturday.
  • West wind 30 - 40mph with gusts up to 70mph

Summary:  A large-scale and massive winter storm will impact the Central, Eastern and Southern U.S. over the next few days. Heavy snow is expected from the Southern Rockies to northern New England, while heavy ice accretion is likely from Texas to Pennsylvania.

Summary: A strong front will product several rounds of significant winter weather, including heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain across most of the central U.S. that will bring prolonged hazardous winter weather conditions and difficult travel conditions. Dangerous wind chills are in place across the Northern Plains into the Upper Midwest and eastern interior Alaska.

Major interstates in the storm's likely path include:  I-35, I-40, I-44, I-55, I-69, I-70, I-72, I-80 and I-90.  Impacts will include a variety of issues ranging from reduced speeds to major slowdowns or even multiday road closures.  Delays in air cargo are likely as well.

Summary

A major storm is set to bring disruptive snow and ice accumulations from the Rockies to the Heartland to the Great Lakes beginning Tuesday night.  Significant disruptions to travel are anticipated in the affected areas.  Bitterly cold temperatures will follow the wintry precipitation.  The National Weather Service said the impacts in areas may be "major" or "extreme"  disruptions to daily life from this storm.  They are urging people to be prepared and not take this lightly.

Summary:  A storm system moving in from the Pacific will bring strong winds to the Northern Rockies into the Northern Plains that may cause blowing snow and blizzard conditions. Strong to severe thunderstorms may bring a threat of strong winds, hail, heavy rainfall and localized flooding across portions of the Lower/Middle Texas Coast.

Also please keep in mind that parts of the Northeast / New England area received heavy snow and blizzard conditions over the weekend. With the large amounts of snowfall, roads were closed. Areas DOTs were getting the plows out late last night and early this morning. Closures and delays should be expected areas impacted are Long Island and New York City, eastern Pennsylvania to include Philadelphia, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Summary:   A powerful Nor'easter is expected to develop off the Mid-Atlantic coastline on Friday before impacting eastern parts of the Northeast and New England this weekend.  Numerous hazards are likely from heavy snow, with significant accumulations across eastern Long Island/New England, to gusty winds and coastal issues.  The combination of snow and winds may result in blizzard conditions.  

 
Blizzard conditions are likely to slow down or shut down supply chains temporarily in parts of the East Coast this weekend.  Significant delays are possible due to lengthy road closures and scattered widespread power outages.
 
Lanes of concern:
• Interstate 64 from Chesapeake, Virginia, to Charleston, West Virginia.
• Interstate 85 from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Petersburg, Virginia.
• Interstate 95 from Florence, South Carolina, to the Maine-Canada border.

Summary:  A second clipper will move through the Northern Plains into the Great Lake, Ohio Valley, and Northeast Monday and Tuesday with additional light snow which may impact travel.

Snow expected from 11pm tonight until 11amMST Tuesday

North Dakota
Wind Chill Warning
A wind chill warning is in effect from 9pm tonight until noon on Tuesday.
  • Wind chill -50
 
South Dakota
Wind Chill Advisory
Southeastern South Dakota is under a wind chill advisory from 6pm tonight until 10amCST on Wednesday. 
  • Wind chill -35
 
Minnesota
Wind Chill Warning
Minnesota is under a wind chill warning from 5am to noon CST on Tuesday.
  • Wind chill -40 to -45
 
Iowa
Wind Chill Advisory
Wind chill advisory is in effect from 6pm tonight until 11am CST on Wednesday.

A wind chill warning is in effect from 3pm to noon on Tuesday for most of the state.  A winter weather advisory is in place for southeastern Wisconsin.  Snow is expected.

Along the western edge of Michigan bordering the lake is under a winter weather advisory until 7pm Tuesday.  Snow is expected.  Also under a winter weather advisory is the eastern portion of MI.

Hazardous Weather Outlook
North central and  Northeastern Ohio are under a hazardous weather outlook today through tonight.  Snow is expected.

Winter Weather Advisory
Areas surrounding Pittsburgh on eastern side are under a winter weather advisory.  Snow expected.
