Summary:  An artic air mass will bring cold temperatures across must of the central and eastern U.S. This will also bring mixed precipitation and ice conditions from south Texas and the central Gulf Coast into the southern Mid-Atlantic which may cause hazardous travel conditions and power outages. The most significant icing is likely in the eastern Carolinas.

SummaryA wintry mix is expected tonight from the Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England along a cold front.  One or more waves of low pressure tracking east along this front will likely bring area of heavy snow and significant ice from south Texas to into the Carolinas Thursday night into Saturday morning.

Weather Update 01.18.22

Summary: As a potent winter storm moves off the coast of New England, heavy snow will be possible in its wake downwind of the eastern Great Lakes into Tuesday. A quick-hitting winter storm will bring strong winds and snow to the Northern Plains and Upper Great Lakes Tuesday.

Keep in mind that areas are still trying to dig out from Winter Storm Izzy that moved through Sunday and Monday. Parts of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee received 14-20 inches of snow. Snow was reported as far south as Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Roads remain icy in parts of the South and Northeast with more snow possible in these regions later this week. Many LTL carriers were closed yesterday due to weather issues and will be trying to recover the remainder of the week. Also, blizzard conditions are possible Tuesday in parts of the Upper Midwest; several inches of snow through Tuesday night from eastern North Dakota to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Wind gusts will reach 35 to 55mph, producing period of potential whiteouts. Trucks will be hit by high winds in western sections of the Dakotas leading to high risk of rollovers. There is a risk of rain/freezing rain over parts of the Southern Ohio/Tennessee Valleys and Middle/Lower Mississippi Valley on Wednesday.

North- central and Northeast Wisconsin has a hazardous weather outlook for today and tonight.  Hazardous travel conditions are expected to develop north of Highway 29 this morning, then continue into the evening.  Accumulating snow is expected in the morning and early afternoon followed by a mix of freezing drizzle and light snow for the later afternoon and evening hours.

New York
Winter Weather Advisory
There is a winter weather advisory for western New York bordering Ohio, Lake Erie and extending up to Buffalo.  This is in effect until 10am this morning.  Lake effect snow is still in place.  Syracuse, NY is also under a winter weather advisory until 10am this morning.  The Syracuse area is expected to also pickup more lake effect snow this morning.  
  • 2-3 inches additional snow accumulation
  • Wind gusting as high as 30mph
 
A wind chill advisory is also in place for Northern Vermont, Northern New Hampshire and Northern Maine starting at 4pm today and extending until 4am on Wednesday.  Very cold wind chills are expected.  Wind chills will be around -30.

Weather Update 01.17.22

Summary:  A major winter storm will continue with heavy snow and strong winds today from the central Appalachians into Upstate New York. Dangerous travel, power outages, coastal flooding are expected. Strong winds are expected behind the storm as far south as Georgia which could lead to additional power outages and tree damaged, especially in areas with significant ice.
 
Keep in mind that over the weekend this storm moved through North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia bringing significant snowfall and ice in many areas. Travel is still dangerous in some areas.

Terminals are reporting closures in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio, South Carolina, Maryland, Kentucky, Virginia, New York, and West Virginia.

The eastern half of Ohio is under a winter storm warning until 1pm this afternoon.  Heavy snow is occurring.  Many areas have seen 7-14 inches.

Summary:
A fast-moving winter storm will bring heavy, accumulating snow which may combine with gusty winds to produce hazardous travel across parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest into the Mid-Mississippi Valley through Saturday morning.  This storm will spread wintry precipitation from the Southeast into the Northeast U.S. this weekend and into early next week.
 
Potential travel lanes of concern:
  • I-29 from Grand Forks, ND to Kansas City, MO
  • I-20 from Florence, SC to Atlanta, GA
  • I-35 from Des Moines, IA to Kansas City, MO
  • I-80 from Iowa City, IA to Omaha, NE

Summary:  A winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow and gusty winds to the Northern Plains into the Upper and Mid-Mississippi Valley that may cause some hazardous travel beginning Thursday night into Friday. The winter storm system is expected to impact the Mid-South, Southeast and East Coast this weekend.

Winter Weather Advisory
Eastern Montana is under a winter weather advisory.  A Light wintry mix is expected today changing to snow tonight.  
 
North Dakota
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Northeastern North Dakota is under a winter storm warning from 6pm this evening to 9pmCST Friday.  The remainder of the state is under a winter weather advisory from 6pmCST though Friday.
  • Winter storm warning:  Heavy snow expected.  Total snow accumulations of 6-10 inches.
  • Winter weather advisory:  Mixed precipitation expected.  Total snow accumulation up to 3 inches and ice accumulations up to one tenth of an inch.  Winds gusting as high as 45mph on Friday.  
 
South Dakota

Iowa
Winter Storm Watch
The winter storm is expected to impact the area Friday.  There is a potential for moderate to heavy snow accumulations.  The snow is expected to cause impacts to travel especially Friday evening.  Wind of 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30mph will produce pockets of blowing and drifting snow.  
 
Wind chill watches are in effect for the following areas:  Eastern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.  This wind chill watch is effect from Friday evening through Saturday aftern0on.  Dangerously cold wind chills are possible.  Wind chills are expected to reach -35 to -45.
 
In advance of the winter storm that is set to hit the above named states, hazardous weather outlooks have been issued but are not to winter storm watches or advisories yet since this system has not moved.  Areas that could be impacted starting Friday night and through the weekend are as follows:  Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan.

Weather Update 01.12.22 - U.S.

Summary:  Heavy rain will bring flooding and landslide risks in Washington across the Olympic Peninsula and Northern Cascades into Thursday. Light snow and freezing rain is expected east of the Cascades into Montana through Wednesday morning. Gusty winds may cause hazardous travel in Montana and Wyoming throughout the day.

As a heads up, there is a storm that is forming. A Canadian storm system is expected to bring accumulating snowfall to the Northern Plains Thursday night into Friday. Looking ahead to Thursday night, a strengthening surface low emerging out of the Canadian Prairies is expected to dive south into the North Central U.S. Thursday night into Friday. The next storm system is primed to produce heavy snow and will result in treacherous travel conditions across parts of the Northern Plains and Midwest to close out the work-week.
 
Washington
Flood Warning / Flood Watch
Northwest Washington is under a flood warning. Heavy rain is expected over the slopes of the Olympics.  Rain totals for this event Tuesday and Wednesday could end as high as 10 inches.  A flood watch is in effect to include Seattle, Everett and Bellingham.   Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Tuesday rainfall totals:  5-7 inches in the Olympics; 3-4 inches along the coast; 2-4 inches in the Northern & Central Cascades; Another 1-1.5 inches is forecast today.

Weather Update 01.10.22 - U.S.

Summary:  It's a cold start to the week across the Northern tier of the U.S. as a plethora of wind chill advisories and warnings are in effect. Heavy lake effect snow is likely downwind of the Great Lakes early this week. Continuing snow bands will set up mostly in portions of northern lower Michigan, as well as northern Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania and upstate New York. This will impact travel on Interstates 75, 81 and 90. Highest amounts of snow will probably pile up across upstate New York. Places like Oswego, Lowville, Rome and Utica could see up to 24 inches through early Tuesday. Wind gusts in these states are also expected to hit 35-40 mph, producing blowing snow and whiteout conditions. Also, temperatures will drop into the teens and single digits Monday night, with wind chills in the -20s to -30s.

The snowfall has stopped accumulating over the western half of the United States. The states impacted will start to dig out and recover from over a week of high snowfall accumulations.
